Introduction

Running, and in particular trail running, is a spontaneous, organic, holistic and unassuming sport. In a world where technology bombards us daily, the opportunity to find solace on a stretch of dirt, on the side of a mountain or, if one is fortunate enough, in the clouds, is a process that I have found to be an essential part of my daily life. Trails offer a freedom and an isolation from the assault on the senses of urban life.

Producing a book like Running Beyond is, of course, personal. I am lucky to have had the opportunity to have interwoven my love for both sport and photography, and to enjoy a profession that I would not trade for anything. The words and images bound between the front and back covers of this book are not all encompassing; this is not an A–Z volume of trail running. It is instead a journey of experiences, documented over four years to provide an insight into what I consider to be some of the most wonderful races that the world has to offer.

Richtersveld Transfrontier Wildrun, South Africa (200km)

Placing one foot in front of the other as a method of transport takes us back to our roots, back to our basic instincts: the simple act of running. At its heart it’s about being in the wild, surviving and fulfilling a primal need to cover ground in search of food and a place to sleep. Situated in the remote Richtersveld Transfrontier Park in the most northwestern part of South Africa, the Richtersveld Transfrontier Wildrun ticks all the boxes as a location for a wild adventure that harks back to our primal needs.

Grand to Grand, USA (274km)

A Fact File Grand to Grand pair of Levis, a check shirt, a leather waistcoat, a hat and a pair of boots are the customary clothes required to blend in to Kanab as if a local. This small town in Utah is known as ‘Little Hollywood’, due to its history as a filming location for westerns such as Stagecoach, El Dorado and even modern-day classics such as Planet of the Apes.

The Coastal Challenge, Costa Rica (236km)

Known locally as the ‘Rainforest Run’, The Coastal Challenge (TCC) is a multi-day race run every year along Costa Rica’s lush and tropical Pacific coastline. Weaving in and out of the Talamancas – a coastal mountain range spread across the southwest corner of the country – the race covers a demanding 236 kilometres over six days. Part jungle, trail and alpine race, the TCC is an assault course of topography.
