From the Publisher
Mercedes-Benz 220SEb W111 Coupé/Cabriolet, 02.1961/09.1961-10.1965
The W111 Coupés and Cabrios were based on the unchanged chassis of the W111 sedan
They started with a 2.2 L straight six-cylinder fuel injected engine (M127) that produced 120 hp
Not a single part of the four-door body shell could be used for the coupé or convertible
Mercedes-Benz 300SE W112 Coupé/Cabriolet, 02.1962-12.1967
The 300SE two-door models carried the 3.0 L big-block six-cylinder powerplant (M189) and the air suspension. Here is a look at part of the suspension
The cabin of both W111 and W112 cars was except for the walnut wood trim the same. Automatic transmission and power steering were standard equipment
Like the 300SE sedan they offered more chrome trim on the outside to distinguish them from their lower priced siblings
Mercedes-Benz 250SE W111 Coupé/Cabriolet, 09.1965-12.1967
In mid-1965 the W111 sedan models were replaced by the W108. Also the two-door models received the 2.5 L engine (M129) of the W108, pictured here from below
They received larger 14-inch wheels and the disc brakes of the W108 series, now with discs on the rear wheels as well
With 150 hp the cars were significantly faster than the models they replaced
Mercedes-Benz 280SE W111 Coupé/Cabriolet, 11.1967-05.1971
Two years later the 2.5 L models were replaced by 2.8 L models (M130). Again, it was decided to retain the two-door models with their internal code W111
Like in the 600 Grosser, the fine-looking wood veneer of the instrument cluster was changed to leather
As the 2.8 L cars were as fast and less thirsty than the 3.0 L, the 300SEC W112 models were dropped. Here is a look at the 2.8 L engine
Mercedes-Benz 280SE 3.5 W111 Coupé/Cabriolet, 11.1969-07.1971
A bigger change came, when the 3.5 L V8 engine (M116) was launched. 200 hp allowed a top speed of some 205 km/h. Here is the engine from below
Other changes were a lower, wider grille and protective rubber strips for the bumpers
These “Flachkühler” models proved very successful and are still today the most expensive and thought-after versions. Here is the V8’s rear suspension
