My first crush happened when I was 24 years old.
It was a ’78 Sanglas 400F (a Spanish classic motorcycle) that had belonged to my father. It slept its last days under a dingy blanket, eaten by dust and mice.
I set out to give it a second chance. My problem: I had no idea about mechanics.
At that time, I would have given anything to have someone sit down with me and explain how that motorcycle worked, what its parts were and how I could fix all those problems that were keeping it at a standstill.
Above all, I would have greatly appreciated it if someone could have explained it to me in words I could understand.
No matter how hard I searched, I ended up finding explanations that were too technical for my limited knowledge, or contradictory explanations for the same problem.
The aim of this book is that: to explain how a motorcycle works, to tell you one by one about its parts, to talk about its breakdowns and possible solutions, but always as if it were a conversation between friends.
I am not going to go into incomprehensible technicalities that you can look up on the internet, I want to explain the basic mechanics of a motorcycle in words that everyone can understand.
In this book we will start from scratch, from the very basics inside a motorcycle, but we will get to the last bolt worth understanding.
I assure you that I have learned as much from writing it as I have from fixing and restoring motorcycles, so it is an honor for me to be able to tell you about it now.
I hope not to disappoint you.
Let’s get started. Let’s get to work.
